Document Summary

Week 7 lecture #13: monday february 13, 2017. The non-identity problem - solutions: parfit, steinbock, and harman. A succinct statement of the problem or puzzle. Such actions are puzzling because they do not make these people worse off than they otherwise would have been; but plausible, one harms someone only if one makes her worse off (harman 137). Three primary approaches (not exhaustive: bite the bullet: seemingly harmful and wrong actions that involve the non-identity effect are. If we hadn"t made the risky choice, those ppl wouldn"t exist. Doesn"t make them worse off cuz they confer existence on them. No victims not doing anything wrong actually neither harmful nor wrong. Keep your principle but give up on your institution: abandon wrongs require victims: this is parfit"s & steinbock"s approach, deny that harm requires worsening: this is harman"s approach. Paper topic; identifying the different answers to the non-identity problem.
