PHLB09H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Lie
Document Summary
Goldman and ackerman both think autonomy is important, they both are on the side of autonomy. Ackerman also thinks that autonomy is important but he says there might be cases where we might need to intervene for the benefit of the person. Historically, doctors in their code of ethics, thought that withholding the truth at times was one of the tools they could use to help the patient. In order to know which decision to make, you need to have all of the information, that is why truth-telling is important. Withholding information is going against a person"s autonomy. Someone might not be physically (child) or emotionally ready to know the entire truth. Someone who is in a vulnerable position. You might want to tell a version of the truth that is suitable for them, this is a version of paternalism.
