Document Summary

Week 3 lecture 5: the analysis of knowledge. Part i: edmund gettier is justified true belief knowledge? . This is a conceptual or analytical question. Differs from an empirical investigation into the question. Gettier states that the traditional analysis of knowledge fails. Case 1: smith and jones compete for a job. Now stipulate that smith also has ten coins in his pocket and that he is unaware of how many coins he has in his pocket. Smith is mislead about what is the case even though his belief of (e) is justified and true, this is why gettier says the traditional analysis of knowledge fails. Case 2: jones owns a ford (pg. 123/preview pg. 4) Things to keep in mind moving forward: (1) we haven"t and gettier hasn"t investigated what is meant by justified" in these cases. You might think someone is justified if they have their reasons for their beliefs readily available.
