Document Summary

Experiments reveal a property of matter called electric charge that can result in the attraction or repulsion of objects. There are two types of electric charge, positive and negative. They contain an equal number of positive and negative charges. Rubbing one substance against another can transfer charges such that one object acquires a net or total positive charge and the other acquires a net or total negative charge. Two objects that both possess net positive or net negative charge repel one another. There is an attraction between two objects if one has net positive and the other net negative charge. The simplest expression for the electric force between objects with net charges q and q separated by a distance r is f=kqq/r2, where k is a constant. Charles coulomb (1736-1806) proposed this law and it has the same form as newton"s law of gravitation. The net charge can be a positive or a negative number.
