Lecture outline: making sense of international migration- states, sovereignty, nation, nation states, why do people move. We all belong to one country at least one passport/one nationality. Political organization of contemporary world space into mutually exclusive and legally sovereign territorial states. A set of institutions that possesses a monopoly on rule, making and the legitimate use of force within a bounded territory (central power that radiates) ex. States are historical outcomes for various reasons. States evolved as power holders became more established victories. Central authorities must be able to communicate and have a degree of solidarity. Transfer of jurisdiction is the constitutive element of international migration ( easing members of one society to become a member of another) Centralization of power and the delineation of political boundaries, as european monarchs gradually defeated or co-opted other sources of power, such as the church and lesser nobility.
