POLA01H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Operation Wetback, Bracero Program, Social Integration
Document Summary
Temporary foreign workers (tfw"s) are voluntary, no one was forced to come this is different from indentured labour where they weren"t allowed to stay after their contracts. Tfw"s are selected for their economic contribution but not welcome to stay as citizens (another strain of wanted but not welcome syndrome) Only applied to dual citizenship (the bending law of citizenship revocation) so that way they can be moved to the country they also have citizenship for. Tfw"s have far fewer rights (still basic human rights) than both permanent residents and citizens. For example; no political rights, and they pay for things such as pension plans and unemployment insurance but are not allowed to receive it. This whole system is completely and intimately related to the nation state. Nation-states are based on community (nationhood) as is based on civic principles with a sense of commonality. Willing to work for less because they"re often desperate.
