Defined by skocpol: weak state, external pressure and organized peasantry: there is lack of social base that encourages opposition from everyone in society/support for extremism over reform. Authoritarianism any political regime that is not democratic e. g. any country in which serious about of opposition and no free and fair elections. Personalist regimes authoritarian regimes in which whims of leader rather than military or party are central. It is any regime in which rule of law, military and weak party e. g. russia, State revenue easily centralized: export crops, foreign aid, oil. Generates large opposition: trample on everyone, large (cid:862)(cid:374)egati(cid:448)e (cid:272)oalitio(cid:374)(cid:863) Difficult to reform: loss of power= jail or worse, allies hold on at all costs, sultans know that they have everything to lose so they do not want any reform. Promotes maximalism: moderate opposition discredited, legitimates extremists. Generates crisis: emphasis on personal loyalty incompetence.
