International law: rules and norms that are generally considered binding upon states (e. g. Sources of international law are: bilateral and multilateral treaties. Includes international conventions and charters that must all be ratified domestically. Then becomes legally binding amongst all parties to abide by what it says in the treaty. Most important source of international law: clear, explicit and written out- when you sign it you are legally tied to it. Only legally binding to states that agree: customs. There has been a pattern of behaviour that we agree to be acceptable to follow and implicitly agree that this is the law-a practice with seniority: general principles. Jus cogen (strong law): a principle that is so fundamental that no other law can contradict it. No treaties on piracy, genocide, slavery, torture, etc. Jus ad bellum: just reasons for going to war.
