PSYA01H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Operational Definition, Internal Validity
Document Summary
Correlation alone is not enough to show that you understand something. With the cage scenario, sharks can sense the electrical current passing in their snout. It is a claim that metal cage with current is the reason why the sharks act like this. They say for example if someone put a light in your face, you would try to move it, attack it so you can see again. This is what the shark is trying to do. This is a hypothesis (sharks want to attack cage, not humans). Experiments involve different behaviours across two or more conditions according to a theory. Independent variable- when we have control (presence of electro current) Dependant variable what we are measuring (aggression in shark) If the sharks bite or physically attach the rod. It is now a clear experiment that can be conducted/measured. Experiment has actually been done to prove it. Another example is prejudice behaviour emerging when self-esteem is lowest (poor economy).
