Document Summary

Lecture 4: finding answers begins by finding questions. Scienti c process begins with a theory somebody"s explanation to explain things they saw. Good theories lead to hypotheses predictions that can be empirically tested in a way that might prove them to be incorrect (falsi able) Freud"s human behaviour and religious theories of existence unfalsi able, untestable. Con: person being watched can"t just be ignored because it makes a person more attentive and behaviour changes. Variable anything that can take on multiple values. Eye color can have the values of green, blue, and brown (categorical variable) Height is a continuous variable because values lie on a continuum. In reality, whether a variable is categorical or continuous depends on how it"s measured. If you measure some variable across many people, you can end up with a lot of data and too much of it doesn"t make sense when it"s in raw form; these stats are used to describe data.
