PSYA01H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Hindbrain, Pituitary Gland, Medulla Oblongata
Document Summary
3. 3: structure and organization of the nervous system. The brain makes up only 2% of our body"s mass, though it uses 20-30% of our energy. The brain is divided into 3 main regions: The midbrain: controls basic sensory responses and voluntary movement: visual attention is captured though superior colliculus, auditory attention is captured through inferior colliculus, substantia nigra connects to forebrain to release dopamine and allow movement. The forebrain: emotion, memory and thought: basal ganglia:planned movement, skill learning, reward processing, amygdala: emotion, hippocampus: memory, hypothalamus: temperature regulation, motivation (hunger, thirst, sex, thalamus: sensory relay station. Localization of function: an area of the brain serving a specific function, ex. Cerebral cortex: where high-level perception occurs, where controlled motor activities originate; where all our controlled interactions with the external world occur. Humans have the largest brain to body ratio, due largely in part to the cortex.
