Top-down perception: recognition with contextual basis; when our perceptions are influenced by our by our expectations or by our prior knowledge. Bottom-up perception: based on sensory experience; occurs when we perceive individual bits of sensory info (ex. Sounds) and use them to construct a more complex perception (ex. How can we look at a figure (object of interest) and understand what ground (the context the figure occurs in) it is. Edges and contours are usually critical in this respect; they provide good info. Escher photo: notice the variation in foreground and background. Sometimes visual scenes are somewhat ambiguous/open to interpretation. Gestalt psychologists: the whole is the more than the sum of its parts. E: good continuation = effective layering/placement more about lines. F: closure = closing the figures, ex pacman to circle. Hold one nearer to your face then the other and focus on the front one, there should be two back fingers.
