Souls are spiritual and do not conform to natural laws something beyond the physic notion of the world humans never thought of studying themselves because we believed that we were special we are spirits in a material world. Animism: the idea of attributing a soul to an inanimate object eg. hurricane wants revenge on america thats why they were hit. Psychology is a science as we do experiments to prove a theory/point. Cartesian dualism we are a biological machine but thats not all we are . we have a soul and so we have a dual nature. John locke believed we are completely machine no soul even part of our mind is not our soul but machinist. Nature vs. nurture believed as we were born a blank slate we become who we are by our experiences. Empiricism the only method to the true answer is by experimentation. Materialism we are just material there is no spiritual component.
