PSYA01H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Stanford Prison Experiment, Kurt Lewin, Pluralistic Ignorance
Document Summary
Social psychologists study the interaction between the person and the situation. Kurt lewin (the key founder and the grandfather of social psychology) expressed this insight as behavior is a function of the person and the environment. Social psychologists focused on the present moment, arguing that the situation a person happens to be in at a particular time is a key influence on behavior. Mimicry is taking on for ourselves the behaviors, emotional displays, and facial expressions of others, it is a key part of learning to get along with each other. Freud"s iceberg metaphor of consciousness indicates hat the vast bulk of our consciousness is determined though implicit unconscious. Chameleon effect describes how people mimic others non-consciously, automatically copying others" behaviors even without realizing. Conformity pressure (peer pressure) means do whatever your pees do. Social norms are the (usually unwritten) guidelines for how to behave in social contexts.
