Psya02 introduction to psych week 3, lecture 6. The uniqueness of the human infant; no other animal is born so helpless and so dependent on its parents: a lot of animals have lots of babies and just leave them survival of the fittest . Lots of physical development occurs prior to birth. The physical dependence sets the stage for social development: continuing until long thereafter, development that continues throughout the lifespan. Stages differences in abilities: cross-sectional ; get a group of x years and x years and you look at, longitudinal approaches; allow you to follow the same individual, prenatal; 38 weeks of pregnancy. Fetal stage (last seven months: infant/toddler (birth to two years, adolescence (harder to define, adulthood and old age. Zygote stage: initial single begins cell dividing and differentiating, eventually forming. 2000 different kind of cells (blood cells, nerve cells, bone cells and etc. ) all with the same dna. Sitting without support 4 9 months.
