Document Summary
Nomotheic research: psychological research aims to understand the average human. Others focus on individual diferences : how and why some humans difer from others. An ability to measure intelligence might be beneicial in a number of ways but can also be controversial. Beneit: it allows you to assess whether certain educaional approaches lead to higher levels of success. Controversy: sterilizaion based on iq score: eugeneics. Psychologists deine intelligence tesing as a method for assessing an individual"s mental apitudes and comparing them with others using numerical scores. Galton, a cousin of darwin, was into measuring humans in every way possible including measuring their ability to make sensory discriminaions which he assumed was linked to intellectual prowess: link to normal distribuions. Standardized tests establish a normal distribuion of scores on a tested populaion in a bell-shaped patern called the normal curve. In the us, lewis terman adapted binet"s test for american school children and named the test the stanford-binet test.
