Self-conscious and evaluative emotions: embarrassment - requires self-recognition (sr) Rouge-mirror test: shame, guilt, envy, pride - require sr + knowledge of rules & standards of evaluation. Need more cog skill and more experience with world. Need reinforcement and correction from caregivers to develop these emotions. By age 3, pride and shame: must know success/failure, and also task difficulty. Must have internalized rules (not just following when being watched ) , it has to be something that is actually imp to them. Guilt develops last (age 9): must understand personal responsibility. Recognizing and interpreting emotions: shortly after birth, respond to another infant"s cry, can distinguish own cry from others", prefer to look at happy faces than neutral, sad, or angry. May be due to ease of discrimination: social referencing - between 8 and 10 mos. begin to monitor parents" emotional reactions.
