Document Summary
Fundamental concepts of erikson theory: epigenetic principle: personality unfolds as you progress each stage in life. They may not necessarily be resolved, as development progresses regardless. Freud thinks that if conflict is not solved, then you are fixated in one stage. Erikson believes you progress through stages as you grow older, regardless if you solved the conflict or not. Development is psycho- social influenc: favorable balance: series of contrasting outcomes in each stage. Person must find balance b/w two opposing contrasts. Happy medium : optimal time: appropriate time at which the conflict must be tackled. Meet challenges at the right time: virtue: if you resolve conflict or find happy medium, you develop virtue (positive traits). Infancy: stage where mother"s attachment is most important. Issue: trust vs. mistrust: maladaptation (excessive): sensory distortion too much trust leads to gullible and high expectations, malignancy (deficiency): withdrawal lead to depression, paranoid behaviour, virtue: hope help us overcome challenges and realize our wishes.
