Document Summary
Type of deterioration can help differentiate the type of dementia. Slowly progressive: no acute deterioration, just keeps getting worse (not dramatic) Can"t be diagnosed after one visit: one exception (untington"s disease. Usually after 65 (but there is an early onset one) Early onset: particular gene and develop quicker in progressive. More clinicians know about other dementia form, therefore they are being diagnosed more. Can slow progression down: mental exercise, physical exercise. Temporal and parietal lobe have most atrophy (deterioration of brain) Plaques = deposits of amyloid protein that accumulate in structures important for memory. Manifest in place that need most oxygen more likely to be oxygen starved: hippocampus memory!! (consolidates new memories) Alzheimer patient can learn new information but remember older memories. Appear in rest of parietal then temporal then frontal and then all over the brain. Less sensitive than neuropsychological testing: by the time they show abnormality, cognitive function is really impaired.
