Mild (distressed not disabled) or major (distressed and disabled) Biological basis not always the case. Substance abuse: distressing (abuse, disability (dependence) Substance dependence: tolerance need more to get same effect as before, withdrawal unpleasant symptoms from not taking drug. Schizophrenia: positive symptoms addition new experiences, negative symptoms loss of experiences, delusions not possible. Classification and diagnosis: sadness, hopelessness, helpless, worthless, lack sex drive/appetite. Mania: lots of energy, racing thoughts, delusions that are not likely (but possible) Bipolar disorder: episodes of mania and depression. Specific phobia: scared a very specific thing blown out of proportion.
