PSYB32H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Cognitive Development, Jean Piaget, Animism
Document Summary
Jean piaget -> worked on his own children, used baby biography (scientist/parent making extensive observation of their own child which is used as general data to make conclusion) Theoretically guided process (used naturalistic and experimental; manipulate and control) He was the only observer and coder; intensively observed over 3 years. Small sample size (3), non-random, lack reliability (no inter-rated reliability); focused heavily on motor behaviour. Used longitudinal (from 0 to 3) and natural. Development through piaget"s: changes occur in the structure of thinking processes (cognition), reflected in learning, accomplishment and errors are equally important. Cognitive development: increasing complexity in reasoning; scheme/schema knowledge structure that organizes behaviours, initially based on overt actions on object (ie. baby respond to toys by placing in mouth) Organization: combine schema, adaption assimilate and accommodate (modify schemas to environmental demands) 4 stage of, sensorimotor, preoperational, concrete, formal; age can vary on when stage occurs but the order is always maintained.
