You combine all of the different paradigms when trying to understand a disorder. We want to use a biopsychosocial approach when treating mental illness (there is no, one answer that explains mental illness) The biological paradigm approach is one approach in which we try to understand abnormality. It holds the view that mental disorders are caused by aberrant biological processes. There are different research methods and strategies that we employ that can shed some light on certain disorders. Behaviour genetics in one method of examining mental illness. Genotype versus phenotype: a genotype is what you"re born with; it cannot be changed (fixed at birth). Some argue that the genotype can be switched on or off throughout a person"s life. So although individuals may have the genotype its not always predestined to show as a phenotypic behaviour.
