Document Summary
Lec 4 early cognitive foundations (sensation, perception, learning) Sudden infant death syndrome (sids) = aka crib death. In canada, 3. 4/10,000 infants die from sids rate has decreased substantially. No known means to prevent sids but there are ways to reduce risk. Other risk factors = sex (male), low birthweight, mom"s narcotics use, exposure to cigarette smoke, little prenatal care. Developed in 1973 by t. berry brazelton and colleagues. Evaluates neurological development, reflexes and reactions to people. Rated on each item contributing to 4 categories: physiological, motoric, state, interaction, and global classification worrisome , normal , superior . Reflexes (e. g. sucking is both a survival reflex and a primitive reflex at different times of development, grasping, startle reflex) States of arousal: patterns of states slowly changes to match environment, infants spend 50% of sleep time in rem sleep (this declines to 20% in childhood) Eyes open wide, face is bright; body is quiet.
