PSYB45H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Intellectual Disability, Reinforcement, Walkover
Document Summary
Chapter 6: decreasing a behavior with operant extinction. If individual emits previously reinforced behaviour and that behaviour is not followed by reinforcer person i less likely to do that same thing again when next encountering a similar situation. If a response is increased in frequency through reinforcement, then completely ceasing to reinforce the response causes it to occur less. Extinction in an operant response due to it no longer being reinforced. May take several repetitions of the behaviour occurring ad it not being reinforced before any obvious decrease in its frequency occurs. Extinction weakens behaviour as a result of being emitted w. o being reinforced. Factors influencing the effectiveness of operant extinction: control of reinforcers for the behaviour that is to be decreased. Reinforcers presented by other ppl or by the physical environment can undo efforts at applying operant extinction. Necessary to control behaviour of individuals who may sabotage the extinction procedure.
