Document Summary
Rules: description of a three-term contingency of reinforcement. A situation in which a behaviour will lead to a consequence: partial rules: do not identify all 3 parts of a contingency of reinforcement; but can still control our behavior. Ex. rules that have consequences (not specifically indicated) can often be implied. Contingency shaped vs. rule-governed behavior: contingency-shaped behavior. Behavior that has been strengthened (or weakened) b/c of its immediate consequences in a particular setting. Strengthened gradually by trial & error based on reinforcement (positive/negative) & non-reinforcement. Ex. learning that other kids are impressed and offer praise when you do well in gym class: rule-governed behavior. Behavior that is controlled by the statement of a rule. Involves delayed consequences, & frequently leads to immediate behavior change. Ex. changing your behavior when the gym teacher says you will get better evaluation for sharing the ball as a team player than for hogging it and showing off.
