PSYB45H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Barbecue, Ice Cream Van, Roller Skating
Document Summary
Respondent are involuntary and reflexive behaviours while operant are voluntary behaviours. Cs elicits a response (such as dog salivation after bell ringing). Sd evokes a response, and operant behaviours are emitted (conveys voluntary behaviour). Example of both at same time is bed wetting so bed pad under bed so as soon as drop of liquid, closes the circuit, bell goes off and awakes child. Soon conditioned to waking up before bed is wetted. All respondent but waking up to go to bathroom is operant. Using bathroom properly and changing pajamas etc is all learned operant component. Another example is too hot beverage which burns your tongue so you spit it out is respondent and swearing afterwards or drinking something cold or blowing the drink/taking lid off to cool it off is operant behaviour. Another example is an ice cream truck with a bell ringing, child runs, gets ice-cream and bites it so reflexive part with good taste is respondent conditioning.
