Document Summary

Chapter 8 cytoplasmic membrane systems: structure, function, and membrane trafficking. Viruses are internalized into vesicles known as endosomes and later release their genome into the cell. Herpes virus fuse directly with the plasma membrane, depositing the genome capsid inside the cell. Cytoplasmic viruses often reconstruct the host cell membrane er membrane to create new organelle like structures, referred to the virus factories or viroplasm. Early em studies revealed organelles inside cells (cid:862)a la(cid:272)e-like (cid:374)et(cid:449)o(cid:396)k that sp(cid:396)ead th(cid:396)oughout the (cid:272)ytoplas(cid:373)(cid:863) - keith porter, 1945. Cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells was subdivided into a variety of distinct compartments bounded by membrane barriers. Each organelle contains a particular complement of proteins and is specialized for particular types of activities. Endomembrane system composed of er (endoplasmic reticulum), golgi apparatus, endosomes, lysosomes, and vacuoles that function as part of a coordinated unit. Other organelles include: mitochondria, chloroplasts (plants), peroxisome, nucleus. Each organelle has unique functions = unique proteins.
