Color is completely perception; created by the mind. Newton: discovered that prims break up (refract) white light into spectral components (rainbow) Any single component couldn"t be refracted into a different color (monochromatic colors) 2nd prism combining all colors would recreate white light. We perceive the continuum of wavelengths as qualitatively different phenomena. 3 steps to colour perception: detection of wavelengths. S, m, l-cones: discrimination of wavelengths. Univariance, trichromacy: appearance: assign perceived colours to lights and surfaces of the world. Scotopic: referring to dim light levels or below the level of bright moonlight. Rods are sensitive to scotopic light levels. All rods contain the same type of photopigment molecule: rhodopsin. All rods have the same sensitivity to wavelength, making it impossible to discriminate light of different wavelengths. Green filter: in which the features in the picture appears equally bright but are actually different in colour.
