Arousal imagine you"ve spent all night studying for a midterm, and you start falling asleep in lecture because you"re tired. In this case, you have a very low arousal. The degree to which you are active or awake. The more arousal, the more awake you are. The connection between the two terms is non-linear. Imagine you are very tired, and you have drank several cups of coffee, you come to an exam and the coffee increases arousal. Now imagine you drink too much coffee and your fingers are shaking. In this case the arousal state is too high. You might get distracted by everything around you. You cannot focus your attention, you have a difficult time focusing on just your exam. Too much arousal can be detrimental to your attention. Bottlenecks a metaphor for something that is narrow, like the aperture of a bottle, associated with information processing in the brain. We have several bottlenecks in our processing.
