Document Summary
Early vs. late selection: early: closer to the receptor end, ie vision = the eye, late: behaviour. Premotor theory of attention: attentional control system, eye movement control system. Early selection or early with adaptable filter system. Multi-level filtering: example diagram: sensory inputs -> sensory and perceptual analysis -> high-level analysis -> executive functions. Perceptual load: more bold red signals when there is a moving stimulus present. Attention is confined to a coherent region of space and can move from one point to the next. You direct your attention to certain parts of the visual field by way of the spotlight. So you process the face the spotlight is on, and that face is enhanced. Attention expands from fixation and grows to fill the whole region or shrinks to include just cued location. Attention shifts rather instantly; spotlight attention implies that attention shifts continuously but attention actually switches rapidly.
