There are 3 steps required to become an expert. Cognitive period is very effortful and very deliberate. This is the stage where you"re learning the skill. This stage is very conscious and full of mistakes. Associative period is where you"re fine tuning your skill and getting better. Your efficiency is increasing, and the goal is to do the skill better and make fewer errors. This is when you can do it really well without thinking about it too much. This is the goal of whatever we"re trying to become an expert at. The power law of skill acquisition is very similar to the power of learning. The amount of practice you require to become an expert depends on what skill you"re learning. At first, people were bad at it and it took them a lot of time to read a single page. The same participants came back a year later to do this same task.
