B64 lec2: functional neuroanatomy and the evolution of the nervous system. Rostral or anterior --- head end of 4 legged animal. Caudal or posterior --- tail end of 4 legged animal. Superior or dorsal --- towards the back. 3 customary orientations for viewing the brain and body. Secreted in hollow spaces in the brain known as ventricles. Circulates through ventricles, subarachnoid space, and central canal of the spinal cord. Brain receives nutrients through the carotid arteries and vertebral arteries. The skull and 3 layers of membrane protect the brain. Cerebrospinal fluid circulates through the ventricle, spinal cord and subarachnoid space. The brain has a generous supply of blood. Neural death occurs within 3 minutes of the cns not receiving any new blood supply. Spinal cord extends from medulla to the first lumbar vertebrae. Reticular formation consciousness, arousal, movement, and pain. Cerebellum voluntary movements, muscle tone, balance, speech, motion sickness, executive functions, and emotional processing.
