Firm implantation of zygote in uterine longing o. Once sperm enters egg, coat around ovum hardens so that no more sperm can enter the egg. As the fertilized travels down the fallopian tube towards the uterus to be implanted. Solid ball of cells start splitting while in fallopian tubes. With further development, it forms a hollow sphere with a blastocyst inside within 5 days. Within 10 days, blastocyst implants itself in the lining of the uterus o: embryo. Beg of wk 2 end of wk 8. Mother usually doesn"t realize that she"s pregnant at this time. Formation of amniotic sac, placenta, umbilical cord. Placenta: organ contains blood vessels from mother and baby on different sides. Oxygen & nutrients diffuse from mother"s blood vessels into the baby"s blood vessels, waste goes other way: umbilical cord, connects the fetus to the placenta. Amniotic sac: amniotic fluidprotects fetus by giving it a stable environment and absorbing shock.
