Document Summary

When making decisions, you can use an algorithm where you process the full information and make the decision based off that. If you use an algorithm, it always generates the correct answer. Sometimes we use heuristics, because we don"t have the time and effort to be thorough about a decision. Heuristics allow us to make decisions faster, but they"re more prone to errors. Traditionally, in the context of cognition, emotion has been characterized as a pollutant to logical decision making. In other words, the best way to make a decision is to be logical, and emotion only hurts this process. One example is the ultimatum game, where an emotional response can prevent you from making a logical decision ! the logical decision is to always accept the offer because you"re getting some money instead of nothing. This shows that the emotional response of being cheated overrides the logical decision.
