PSYC02 Lecture 4: Preparing Poster Presentations
• Overall goal for poster presentation is to deliver a presentation that meets all structural/stylistic
requirements as per assignment guidelines
o Also demonstrates your ability to attend to the four elements of effective scientific
communication
• 4 elements of scientific communication
o Foundation
▪ Developing a focused question that is informed by and connected to prior
scientific research and theory
o Framing
▪ Building a strong argument and a compelling narrative through the use of
effective organization
o Fidelity
▪ Delivering a clear, honest, and accurate message based on fundamentals of
good science
o Format
▪ Appropriately adapting content to context, adhering to specific guidelines plus
general aspects of APA style
• Key elements of the poster
o Develop a specific guiding question from your topic area
o Describe the relevance and representation of this question to the general public
▪ Linking to 1+ non-scientific popular press article on this issue
o Frame a research question in terms of preliminary hypotheses / expectations
o Concisely document your search and review process
o Summarize global trends and consensus in the literature
▪ Incorporating concrete examples and supporting visuals
▪ Identifying any key conditional factors
o Conclude with a provisional answer to your question while also addressing:
▪ Any major limitations of the existing knowledge base
▪ Promising future directions
▪ Concordance with non-academic writing on the same topic
o Follow all guidelines (e.g., formatting) per assignment guide
o Develop an organized, efficient summary of your findings that makes effective use of
the poste you’e eated
