Document Summary

Back et al. examine whether on-line social network profiles convey accurate or inaccurate impressions of an individual. Goal #1: you should be able to describe the basic arguments underlying the two competing hypotheses that back and colleagues outline. Indealized virtual identity hypothesis: profile owners display idealized characteristics that don"t reflect their actual personalities. They instead reflect the owners" ideal self views rather than what they actually are like. Extended real life hypothesis: people use online profiles to communicate their real personality. Goal #2: you should be able to describe the basic design and analyses used in this study. Participants: 236 osn from the states and germany. Design: participant"s online profile was saved before they were told about the true intention of the study. Analyses: determined accuracy by correlating aggregated observer ratings with accuracy criterion. To see effect of self idealization, there is partial correlations between profile owners ideal ratings and aggregated observer ratings, while controlling for the accuracy criterion.
