PSYC18H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Thomas Robert Malthus, Webcam, Uniformitarianism
Document Summary
Darwin did not come up with his theory all by himself there are people before him that shaped his theory. The first person was jean baptiste-lamarck: thought certain traits that people possess have advantages in any given environment and the ones with those traits are more likely to survive. He thought these traits could be developed through the life span and then passed down. He thought you could inherit genotypes and phenotypes. Another person was charles lyell: geologist, concept of uniformitarianism: the earth has been shaped by forces that are still acting today. Opposing creationism, which was really radical at the time. Last was thomas malthus: economist, he thought that population growth was kept in check by various vices. Certain things like death, hunger and disease keep population in check but those people that can bypass these are more likely to survive. Darwin: naturalist and he went to the islands to study flora and fauna.
