PSYC19H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Stroop Effect
Document Summary
Cognitive representation of desired/undesired end-point that impacts thoughts(cognition). Representation of future state either desired or one you"re trying to avoid. Approach goals or avoidance/anti-goals(things you"re trying to avoid) Avoid typos on my slides (and tests!) Intimately related to self-control (sc) & self-regulation (sr) Sc: self-restraint in line with personal goals. Sr could just be setting a goal. Theory about representation of goals in mind/ brain. Represented similar to other cog rep like memory. Exists as cognitive representation in memory (including implicit representation) Organized as interconnected hierarchy, with goals connected to multiple sub-goals and means to achieve goals. Ex: goal is to excel at work. 3 aspects of job. when thinking about excelling at work all 3 should be activated in mind maybe even automatically. Subordinate goal is excel at work. three aspects are subgoals. below that are either subgoals and means of achieving those goals.
