It takes her several moments to remember explicitly that the man"s voice reminds her of the voice of a man who once attacked her: war vets with post-traumatic stress disorder (ptsd) Mice taught to fear a certain smell pass this information on to their children through their sperm. If parent had an experience, that can affect offspring. Ex, your parent learns to fear a particular smell, it can pass on to us. Same fear for the same smell your parent had. Father learns to associate a shock w/ some nice smell.
