Document Summary

Felt numbness in left hand, then collapsed and fell to the ground from garage roof. Ct scan showed right frontal cortex damage. Stroke led to changes in behavior and personality. Any given behavior is the product of a myriad of complex neurophysiological and biochemical interactions involving the whole brain. Remember, there is no one to one relationship between a specific behavior and a specific neuroanatomical structure. Syndrome a cluster of deficits that tend to occur together with some regularity. Gerstmann syndrome finger agnosia of fingers on either hand. Acalculia: inability to do simple math problems. Results from a left parietal lobe lesion. Localization of dysfunction: correlation between damaged structures and behavioral functions = educated guess about lesion, helps with formulating a differential diagnosis based on known neurological disorders and symptoms. Neurons: 10, specialized for information processing, 100 billion cells, synapses to 1000 10,000 other neurons, total possible connections: 1015 (more than the number of stars in the known universe)
