Lesion size/location: strengths/weaknesses, especially useful in diffuse and local brain damages of cognitive deficits. Age: used to access differential base rates, as aging impacts our cognition. Vocabulary gets better with age while memory gets worse with age. Patterns of cerebral hemisphere: left vs. right handedness, be mindful of cerebral hemisphere dominance. You can usually test for this using functional imaging. Life situations and social background: pre-morbid functioning and cognitive resorts, provides us with accuracy in predicting a person"s premorbid abilities before the onset of injury. Psychological makeup: somethings you may want to know about a patient"s psychological setting. Does not affect all brain structures equally. Results from widespread abnormality/conditions (i. e. meningitis, herpes) Anoxia: lack of oxygen to the brain (i. e. stroke, psychiatric disorders, suicide attempt, chocking, some sexual acts) Hypertension: high blood pressure + risk factors. Certain degenerative conditions: crutz-feldt syndrome where the arm does whatever it wants.
