Part 1: Drugs of Abuse
Soe treatets for all people, ut soeties they do’t!
After a detox, withdrawal symptoms are lessened
Can use medications or psychotherapies
Drug therapies
Can use other drugs, to help individual wean off of the addictive drug
o This introduced drug would help with symptoms of withdrawal
Common psychotherapies
Behavioural therapy environmental factors that can be changed to reduce the
urge of drug abuse
Cognitive based therapies focused on the cognitive symptoms
o Perhaps someone is using a drug to self medicate a mental health issue
Social based programs helping you get back into society, and it is facilitated by a
medical professional (i.e.: counselor)
Abstinence based programs e.g.: Alcoholics Anonymous; religious based in past,
ut overtie it’s ee haged
o Note: Found that AA works best for older males
Part 2: Psychostimulants
Amphetamines
Similar chemical structure shows that they act similarly
Amphetamine is Schedule 3
o It is useful medically, but it is very addictive & controlled
Ephedrine
o Used to make methamphetamine, or pseudoephedrine
o Less controlled in Canada
