Personality is not simply individual differences, that is one common approach to look at individual differences to see how we are alike and different. Allport (1937) considered 49 different definitions of the term before he decided on one he liked. Adolescence is the time period where personality disorders are most dominate or become most apparent. In the early days, personality was not considered a separate area in psychology; instead it usually appeared as a topic of abnormal psychology or social psychology. Interest in the topic grew in the 20th century there are now a diversity of theoretical and methodological approaches to the field, which has contributed to a number of themes and controversies. Personality became a central concern in business and a focus in psychopathology and psychiatry, socialology, education, and social work.
