Alzheimer"s disease is a neurobiological illness characterized by a progressive decline in cognitive functioning. Neurotransmission is the transmission of information between neurons. Electrical transmission: series of electrical events that begin at an axon hillock and proceed down the length of an axon. Local potential: refers to an electrical potential on a specific part of a neuron. Concentration gradient: particles of the same type resist being concentrated. Sodium potassium pump brings in 2 k+ and lets out 3 na+ Na+ channels are voltage gated ion channels and open in response to depolarization. Temporal summation: short succession of excitatory postsynaptic potentials from the same source. Spatial summation: excitatory postsynaptic potentials occurring from multiple sources. The generation of an action potential: during the resting potential, the membrane is only permeable to k+ through open k, as depolarization occurs the membrane become permeable to na+ ions through opening channels. Absolute refractory period: when no amount of depolarization can produce another action potential.
