PSYC85H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Johann Friedrich Herbart, Proprioception, Relate
Document Summary
Two key developments in 19th century critical to psychology as a science: Introduction of quantitative measures for mental processes. Activities of mind can"t be studied experiementally: would entail dividing mind. Have force, life of their own (differ from empiricists) Can attract (build into complex ideas) or repel each other. Mind is a type of battleground of ideas. Consciousness = ideas that facilitate each other. Apperceptive mass: group of ideas we are currently aware of. Apperception: process of becoming aware of something. Ideas that are striving for expression create negative emotions. Ideas that make it into consciousness have allied ideas. Prepare students for new material with overview of what"s to come. Show applications, and give overview of what"s next. Interested in sense of touch and kinesthesis. Among first to show that touch is more than one sense. Amount of change necessary to notice a difference (jnd) is a constant fraction of the stimulus. E. g. lifted weights: 1/40 of reference weight.
