The way we transition through these stages will shape certain aspects of who we are, how we behave and exhibit ourselves later in life: phallic stage. Children really love the parent of the opposite gender. Initially the boy becomes strongly attached to the mother and becomes fearful and jealous of his father (like father is a competitor for mother"s affection) Girls have penis envy discover that males have a sexual organ that they don"t and they want that: latency stage. Post pubescent and enter into real sexual relationship with the opposite gender. Child starts off being jealous of the parent of the same gender and then these emotions are resolved in a period of inentification where bond is strengthened with the same gendered parent oedipus and electra complex. Through these activities, the superego gets trained and developed. Freud"s theory was popular because it was controversial.
