Lecture 6 (03/02/13) • Matthew Sheppard case at 3:20 in the lecture--- Laramie project • Laramie Project is a play based on the Matthew Sheppard case • He went to a gay bar, 2 men went there looking for a fight, they pretended to be gay and befriended him , in the process of going to go hook up they hit him with the back of a gun tied him up to the fence, and he died a few days later. • It is clear that this is a hate crime against gay people, they did nto just want tohurt anyone but went to a gay bar for a reason • Up until now we would not understand Matthew Sheppard’s view *** up until now we have been looking at things from the perspective of the perceiver*** • Nobody asked the question from the target person’s point of view -“The lion’s story will never be told as long as the hunter is telling the story” • Stigma: • Erving Goffman -Possession of a trait/characteristic that is devalued by society -Stigmatized have “spoiled identity” spoiled in the sense they are degraded -Less positive, different from the normal population -Are discriminated against Types of stigma (Goffman, 1963): (a)Abominations of body -Things that are different visually (body shape, size, deformities, etc) -Hyperhidrosis: excessive sweating, see someone with a pit stain you laugh -things that make us look different about our body that we have no control over -eg. Cliff palate because their lip looks different, overweight people , stuttering , cross eyed ect… (b) Blemishes of character -Personality differences (extroverted, introverted, anorexia, bulimia, mental illness, any personality trait, etc) - includes personality traits- what happens if you are shy, that can hurt you, people might make fun of you because you are shy (c) Tribal markers -Any marker of race, gender, age, etc - things that make us different from one tribe to another tribe - gender, age, clothes, religion, skin color ect… What type of stigma is: being aged 73? Tribal Marker, but can also be abomination of body or blemishes of character Are Men the new targets? 15:30 in the lecture -Reacting to affirmative action -White men may feel discriminated -Major & O’Brien, 2005, 25:00 in the lecture and on slide 14-5 about the Model of Stigma Reactions*** know in detail -Collective representations: culture, Where are you? The stereotypes differ according to where you are. If you are black it is different in Toronto vs. jamacia Where you are effects the collective representation -Situational Cues: what is in the immediate environment. What is around you? Such as how many males are in the class vs. girls. It says something about psychology. There are cues in the environment that says something -Personal characteristics: What is the person like? Is this person sensitive about their identity, are they low in self esteem. ( all part of someone making an identity thresat appraisal) -Non-volitional responses: voluntary, responses you cannot control, such as stress response( I made an identity threat appraisal now my heart is racing, sweating, thoughts running through my head) -Volitional responses: involuntary, responses you can control, such as coping mechanisms, telling your self to calm down, or fighting, things we have in our control and I sterotupe them *** the combination of stress response and coping response results in an out come eg. Staying longer in line at the airport due to trace.*** -Meta-stereotype: stereotypes people have about other people’s stereotypes. Eg. I am jewish I am aware of other peoples sterotypes. Collective Representations: culture, meta-stereotype Situational Cues: Cues communicating stigma relevance, where you are, are you at home school , grocery store, number people in a room, where are you. Personal: Individual differences in perception & appraisal( what are you like and how does it affect threat appreasal) Threat Appraisal: Is Stigma relevant? Am I threatened? Involuntary responses: anxiety, disruption, vigilance Voluntary responses: Coping with threat, blaming discrimination, limit social comparisons, disidentification, Outcomes: Self-esteem, performance, health , how do you feel mental and physical health Example at 31:40 in the lecture How do muslems cope at the airport? ( terrism is salient and Muslims are associated with this) Why was he uncomfortable ? Collcective represent – he is in a culture where his roup is denigrated , especially in an airport (sistuationsl cues) people are going to ask questions… in Toronto Personal chara- identify strongly with his group because of what he was wearing - By living in a different country, his personal chara and the enviro and how ppl c him he is going to make an identity threat appraisal. Wearing a hijab, have a beard. Ect Outcome- how is he feeling at the moment, - Due to 911, they are seen as terrorist, - The man prof talked about identified stongly withhis group - He lives in an islamaphobic society - And the way he is dressed - He makes an identity tread sppraisal - Then he responds in involuntary response heart beat goes up , he reacted by voluntary response by standing staright and not moving. Video at 39:00 in the lecture - The eye of the storm - Judge the student based on their eyes - Said blue eyes are the better people in comparison to brown eyed people, they are superior - Cant play with each other - Blue eyed sit in front - Brown eyed students felt like they didn’t want to do anything wrong - They felt like out casts - Within 15 min the kids changed their mind sets - They switched the roles after ** shows a neat demonstration of how the teacher tried to teach the children about race relations -shows how easily we become groupie, by likening the groups in which we belong - shows the students hot it feels to be discriminated against. Stigma & Self-Esteem, 58:00 in the lecture -Stigmatized are disadvantaged economically & interpersonally
