Document Summary

Method: students take test in groups of 3. Minority (2 m vs 1 f) vs same sex-group (3f) Added mixed-majority condition (1 m vs 2 f) Female test-takers in minority did worse than when taken the test as (same-sex) Male in minority did no worse whether in majority as well. Linear progression depending on number of male in the room. Stereotype: white have less athletic ability than blacks. Dv: number of strokes (lower strokes = better performance) Blacks had lower strokes in both natural and control ability (less in natural condition more equal in control). Proximal mechanisms: st temp. impair ss working memory. Hypothesis: st lowers test performance because it reduces wm capacity. Wm: ability to stay focused and inhibit unwanted thoughts. Wm tasl: dual processing task, word list showed, asked to recall words. Dv: recall for words in wm task, math test performance. Acute stress response: confirming negative stereotype is unnerving.
