Activity feelings - that pertain to action in world. Moods - persisting states, continue across number of social episodes. Emotions occur when attempt to cope fails --> disturbance --> emotion getting in way. Emotions differ from simple feelings in that they originate in perception and memory rather than receptor stimulation. Emotions are briefer & more intense than moods, as opposed to moods. Emotions are normal but can become extreme with temperament. Important to be a thinker/problem solver but if trapped in style --> out of balance. Samual johnson defined emotion as a disturbance of mind vehemence of passion, pleasing or painful. John locke concerned about contents of mind, ideas in mind contents of mind are interlocked. Rationality = we have choices and we can behave logically. Making choices about what is good/bad for me --> choices accompanied by feelings --> feelings are signs of if the choice is good.
