Romans -> relgio -> social obligations (participating in particular rituals, if you do not you are not obeying your social obligations. Nation states -> institution (not driven by religion) Imperial expansion (luther said different types of christian) then west realizes there might be different kings of religion (buddhism, hinduism, etc. ) Other monotheisms (jewish & islamic) at least they believe in one god on the right track. Paganism -> (not christianity not monotheisms (believe in one god) hindu, buddhist)
